Peace begins at Home
The Peace begins at Home initiative aims to highlight issues related to domestic violence and mental health. The Centre for Disease Control's Adverse Childhood Experiences studies found that adverse experiences in childhood - anything from a parent's mental illness to neglect and abuse in the household, a parental separation or a child's prolonged illness or hospitalization - have a significant negative impact on both mental and physical health in adulthood. The more adverse experiences a child suffers, and the more frequent or prolonged they are, the more significant the later health impacts. These health impacts include depression, anxiety, substance abuse, risk-taking and criminal behaviour, involvement in abusive relationships, and heart, liver and pulmonary disease.
